Festivals in Japan

There are several festivals throughout the year in Japan. Several mark the important holidays that commemorate specific events or times of cultural significance. Others are more local and are thrown by universities or organizations. Festivals are a great way to meet new people and enjoy some traditional foods and drinks.

Each city will have a number of festivals that take place each year. The best way to find out about them is to ask a local teacher whom you work with about the schedule in the town you are living. There usually will be a website for each town that will show where they are and the times. You can also refer to the Lonely Planet Guide but these are not always accurate as the dates and times can change a bit each year.

ESL teachers are encouraged to take advantage of the festivals each year and also travel to some outside of the town you are residing. Some festivals are known around the world and can be a great experience to share with students and friends back home.
